Cal?s Tran Helps USA to Bronze at University Games

KAZAN, RUSSIA – California’s Cindy Tran helped Team USA to a bronze medal in the 400-meter medley relay Tuesday (July 16) during the final day of the swimming competition at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

Tran, who will be a senior this upcoming collegiate season, swam the lead-off backstroke leg of the United States’ squad in a time of 1:02.07. She teamed-up with Laura Sogar (breaststroke), Kelsey Floyd (butterfly) and Megan Romano (freestyle) to produce a time of 4:02.71, trailing only Russia (3:58.04, new University Games record) and Italy (4:02.61).

Tran had just missed out on a medal in Monday’s 50-meter back final at the Aquatics Palace, posting a time of 28.45 to place fourth. In the July 13 100-meter back final, she clocked a time of 1:01.32 to take fifth place.

The Golden Bears opened the World University Games with a splash, when former standout Liv Jensen and Cal sophomore Rachael Acker won silver medals as part of the U.S. 400-meter freestyle relay on July 10.
