UCLA diver Montana Monahan placed fifth in Sunday’s Women’s Platform event at the USA Diving National Preliminary Zone D Championships in Tucson, Ariz., which earned her a spot in next month’s USA National Diving Championships.

Monahan, a freshman for the Bruins in 2012-2013, was sixth after the preliminaries with a personal record of 221.00 points. She moved up to fifth in the event finals, scoring 217.10 points to advance to the USA Diving National Championships, which take place in Ames, Iowa from Aug. 13-18.

“I am really proud of her effort and execution this weekend,” said UCLA head diving coach Tom Stebbins. “I couldn’t be happier that we have reached one of her long-term goals in such a short window of time. Montana has handled the challenges necessary to have this opportunity with great enthusiasm and discipline. She has accelerated her progress at all the right times. It is great that she will be joining 40 of the nation’s best divers on Platform in August.”

In addition to Monahan, incoming freshman Annika Lenz participated in the One-Meter, Three-Meter and Synchronized Three-Meter at the Zone D Championships, finishing sixth, sixth and fifth, respectively, in those three events.
