Bruins Compete at California Summer Sectionals

Several Bruins participated in last week's California Summer Sectionals (Long Course) in Santa Clarita, Calif. Incoming freshmen Michaela Merlihan and Ashley Tse both had first-place showings, while the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Monica Dornick, Noelle Tarazona, Jessica Khojasteh and Taylor Carlson also won their event.

The 400 Free Relay winning time of 3:51.94 qualified Dornick, Tarazona, Khojasteh and Carlson for next week's U.S. Open, which takes place in Irvine, Calif. from July 30 through Aug. 3.

Tse had three Top Five finishes during the meet, placing first in the 200 Breaststroke (2:35.41) and qualifying for the U.S. Open. She also had a second-place showing in the 200 Individual Medley (2:20.18) and a fifth-place finish in the 100 Breast (1:13.45).

Merlihan's first-place finish came in the 400 Free (4:18.86), which qualified her for the U.S. Open. She was also a part of the first-place 800 Free Relay team.

Among those current Bruins also competing were Lauren Baker, Katy Campbell and Courtney Wilde. Baker was second in the 5,000 Free (1:00:21.30), Campbell was second in the 800 Free (8:57.18) and fourth in the 200 Free (2:05.23) and Wilde was 15th in the 50 Free (27.34).
