Former Cal teammates Josh Satin and Tyson Ross have had some stellar performances this summer in the Major Leagues. Satin is currently batting .313 for the New York Mets, while Ross has won his last two starts in impressive fashion for the San Diego Padres.
Satin, who played for the Golden Bears from 2005-2008 and earned freshman All-America honors in ’95 and first-team All-America accolades in ’98, earlier this summer had a 12-game hitting streak from June 25 through July 7 for the Mets. He is now hitting over .300 in the Big Leagues with a .417 average versus left-handers. Satin was called up from Triple A Las Vegas on June 11 and hit his first Major League home run July 3 versus Arizona. Satin’s First MLB HR
Making his first Big League debut Sept. 4, 2011, Satin now has a career MLB average of .284 in 48 games with 11 doubles (including eight RBI this season), a home run and 10 RBI.
Ross, who was teammates of Satin’s from 2006-08 and was twice an All-Pac-10 selection, has been superb in his last two starts. On Sunday (July 28), he went 8.0 innings with three hits, no runs, one walk and seven strikeouts in a 1-0 win at Arizona. Against the Diamondbacks, he threw 66 of his 101 pitches for strikes and retired 15 of 24 batters either by strikeout or ground out. On July 23, Ross went 6.0 innings with two hits, one run, two walks and six strikeouts in a 6-2 win at Milwaukee. Prior to the contest with the Brewers, his last start was April 17. Ross has now won eight contests in the Major Leagues since being called up with Oakland A’s on April 7, 2010. He has a career ERA of 4.64 in 77 games with 26 starts are 149 strikeouts in 207.2 innings pitched.
Satin and Ross are among the list of 13 players coached by David Esquer to make it to the Major Leagues. Other Cal standouts to make it to the Big Leagues since Esquer began leading the Bears in 2000 include Xavier Nady, Mike Tonis, John Baker, Conor Jackson, Brian Horwitz, Brandon Morrow, Brennan Boesch, Allen Craig, David Cooper, Brett Jackson and Jeff Kobernus.
