Smit Earns Bronze At U-23 Worlds

Stanford oarsman Kaess Smit helped the U.S. Four to the bronze medal over the weekend at the World under-23 Rowing Championships in Linz, Austria.

Rowing its third race in four days, the four, which qualified for the final with a second-place effort in the repechage, pushed itself into the top three a tthe 500-meter mark and stayed there throughout the entire race.

Keeping pace with Australia, the U.S. held off challenges from Italy and Turkey to claim the bronze medal in a time of 6:03.86, five seconds behind gold medal-winning Romania and just over two seconds back of Australia, which claimed silver.

Smit, who will enter his junior year at Stanford in 2013-14, was part of the Cardinal I Eight that took eighth nationally at the IRA Championships in June.
