ASU Wrestling Head Coach Charles Leads U.S. Cadets

TEMPE – Arizona State University head wrestling coach Shawn Charles will serve as the head coach for the U.S. boy’s freestyle team at the FILA Cadet Pan American Wrestling Championship in Madellin, Coloumbia on Sunday.

Cadets are wrestlers who are 15-17 years old. The Pan American Championships feature nations from North, Central and South America.

“I am extremely proud that USA Wrestling entrusted me with the honor of coaching some of our best and brightest,” Charles said. “These young men are highly motivated to win gold for the United States.”

The U.S. team was impressive on the Greco-Roman side of the things on Friday and Saturday with the boy’s and girl’s both winning the respective team titles on each day.  The boy’s earned seven golds and two silvers on Friday with nine of the 10 weight classes having U.S. representatives in the finals.

Charles will be entering his fifth year at the helm of the Sun Devil program. Charles is no stranger to coaching internationally, which including him being named to the 2009 University World Team coaching staff after serving on the U.S. Olympic staff in both 2004 and 2008. A coach with Sunkist Kids, Charles also has served as a coach for two World Cups (2003, 2007) and has helped lead the U.S. at two international tournaments in the Ukraine.
