LEXINGTON, Ky. – The first national coaches poll of the season was released by the AVCA this afternoon, with the Huskies voted to the No. 5 spot. The teams in the top-25 and beyond all have their sights set on KeyArena this December as Seattle will host the Final Four for the first time this year.

The No. 5 preseason ranking is the best for the Huskies since the 2009 season when they were picked fourth. UW was preseason No. 8 in 2010, No. 7 in 2011, and No. 14 last year. The Huskies went 25-7 and reached the NCAA round of 16, and lost just one player who played in the majority of sets last year in Amanda Gil. Krista Vansant and Kylin Muñoz were both named Preseason All-Pac-12 last week in a poll of the conference head coaches.

Although the Huskies are fifth nationally, they are just third in the Pac-12, as Stanford comes in at No. 3 and USC is No. 4 ahead of the Huskies. Defending NCAA Champion Texas is preseason No. 1, receiving 55 of the 60 first place votes. Three first-place votes went to No. 2 Penn State, and Stanford picked up a pair.

Oregon, an NCAA finalist last year, is ranked eighth, and UCLA is ranked No. 12, giving the Pac-12 five teams in the top-12. California is also in the “receiving votes” category. As far as non-conference opponents on Washington’s 2013 slate, Illinois is also receiving votes, essentially the 29th-ranked team in the preseason poll.

The Dawgs open the season on August 30 in Portland for the Northwest Challenge, facing Boise State on the first night. The home opener will be September 3 at Seattle U.
