Pac-12 Tabs Cal Fourth in Preseason Poll
BERKELEY – California ranked fourth in the Pac-12 Men’s Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, the Conference announced Tuesday. The Golden Bears – who produced an 8-7-3 record (3-5-2 in the Pac-12) in 2012 – garnered 13 points in the poll, which made defending Pac-12 champion UCLA (24 points, 5 first-place votes) the preseason favorite.
Cal opens the 2013 season with home matches against two of the four 2012 NCAA College Cup teams, in national runner-up Georgetown – the Bears’ season-opening opponent on Aug. 30 – and Maryland, which takes on the Bears on Sept. 1. Both matches are slated for 2 p.m. starts on Goldman Field/Edwards Stadium and will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
In the NSCAA Preseason Poll, Georgetown is ranked No. 3, while the Terrapins are ranked No. 2. The Bears will play a total of seven games against teams ranked in the preseason poll, including two matches against No. 9 UCLA (Oct. 13 at UCLA and Nov. 3 at home), an Oct. 25 game vs. No. 16 San Diego, and two matches against No. 23 Washington (Oct. 6 at home and Nov. 10 at UW).
Cal is scheduled to play nine games that will air on the Pac-12 Networks. Five of those matches – including Oct. 6 vs. UW, Oct. 20 vs. Stanford and Nov. 3 vs. UCLA – will take place in Berkeley.
Pac-12 men’s soccer will receive extensive coverage as 28 matches will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks throughout the year. For more information and to view the 2013 television schedule, visit www.pac-12.com.
