Bin Makes Cut In LPGA Event

Aug 31, 2013

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Washington junior SooBin Kim is off to a terrific start at the LPGA Safeway Classic, finishing the first two round 2-under par and making the cut. Kim is playing in her first LPGA event after qualifying for the Safeway Classic over the summer.

Kim opened with a round of 1-over par 73, but stormed back on Friday to fire a round of 3-uner par 69 and finish above the cutline. Kim finished the second round tied for 66th place, 12 strokes behind Pornanang Phatlum who is 14-under par.

Kim, understandably had some butterflies early in round one, shooting 39 on the front nine, including a double-bogey and a pair of bogeys. However, she fought back to make three birdies on the back nine, shooting 34 to stay in the tournament.

Saturday, Kim played almost a flawless round, not making a bogey until the 18th hole. She finished with four birdies and just the one bogey to shoot 69.

Kim is out on the course early Saturday morning and off to a hot start, making birdies on two of the first three holes.

Also competing in the LPGA Safeway Classic is UW alum, Paige Mackenzie. Mackenzie also made the cut and currently sits in a tie for 36th place. She fired an opening round 71 and backed that up with a 68 on Friday. She’ll tee off later Saturday morning for her third round.

The Dawgs open the collegiate season on September 10 when they travel to Japan to compete in the TOPY Cup. In the meantime, Bin will fight it out in Portland with the world’s best after making the cut in her first LPGA event.
