Cal Downs UC Davis 4-0

Sep 8, 2013

  • Ifeoma Onumonu leads the team with five goals through six games. In her freshman campaign, she had three goals through the first six games.
  • This is Cal’s second shutout of 2013. The Bears have held opponents to just four goals total while scoring 15.

SAN FRANCISCO - No. 18/19 California used three second-half goals to down UC Davis 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium at the University of San Francisco. The Golden Bears improve to 5-0-1 this season, while the Aggies drop to 2-3-0.

“Today was a very nice team performance with good goals from multiple players. UC Davis was very well-organized and challenged us,” said head coach Neil McGuire.

The Golden Bears net all three second-period goals within a span of 10 minutes, dominating possession of the ball for most of the game. They outshot the Aggies 22-9, forcing Aggie goalie Taylor Jern to make 10 saves while Cal’s Emily Kruger needed just three.

Cal was in attack mode from the onset, shooting three balls within frame in the first five minutes and maintaining that tempo throughout the first period before sophomore Samantha Witteman (Redondo Beach, Calif.) headed a ball in on a cross from Mekenna DeBack (Clayton, Calif.) for goal No. 1 at the 30-minute mark. The Aggies had just three chances of their own to score compared to Cal’s 14.

After the half, the Golden Bears returned with the same aggression but increased their shot quality, scoring three goals between the 47 and 56-minute marks. Sophomore Ifeoma Onumonu (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) was assisted by senior Kory Lamet (Martinez, Calif.) at 47:46, followed by senior Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick’s (Pleasanton, Calif.) goal and assist by Rachel Mercik (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) at 49:15. Mercik got her own chance to score at 55:47, assisted by senior Emi Lawson (Seattle, Wash.).

The Golden Bears will enjoy a break in the action this weekend, playing only an exhibition game against Cal women’s soccer alumni on Sunday, before returning to the pitch Thursday, Sept. 19 to face Santa Clara at 7 p.m. in Bronco territory.
