TANAGURA, Japan The Oregon State women’s golf opened its 2013-14 campaign with a respectable second-place finish at the Topy Cup behind a career-best 1-over 217 by junior Anica Yoo.

The Beavers finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 26-over 292-295-303--890 to finish second behind Pac-12 rival Washington and ahead of the three Japanese teams that competed.

Yoo led Oregon State with a sixth-place finish, posting a solid 1-over 72-72-73--217 at the par-72, 6,087-yard Tanagura Country Club, while senior Seshia Telles bounced back after a tough opening round to finish 10th with a 4-over 77-70-73--220.

Yoo’s 1-over 217 is her best career score in a three-round tournament, bettering the 3-over 219 she shot at the Oregon State Invitational last fall. It’s also the first top-10 finish of her career.

“I am pleased with our first event and definitely believe that we can maintain a scoring average of 300 and under this season,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “They have the experience and the game to accomplish an extremely successful season.

“I am impressed with how well Anica is striking the ball. She and Seshia are both playing very well, and I anticipate they will continue to be successful through the season.”

Sophomore Ashlee Pickerell parlayed a career-best 1-under 71 in the opening round into a 16th-place finish with a 13-over 71-77-81--229, while sophomore Chelsea Saelee finished in a tie for 17th with a 14-over 76-76-78--230 and senior Lauren Sewell was tied for 20th with a 16-over 73-80-79--232.

The Huskies dominated the event with their golfers holding down the top four spots, led by medalist Charlotte Thomas who posted a 7-under 71-69-69--209.

Oregon State returns to action Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
