Pac-12 announces volleyball players of the week

Sep 16, 2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Volleyball Players of the Week for the week of Sept. 9-15. WASHINGTON’s Krista Vansant was named the Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, ARIZONA STATE’s Bianca Arellano was voted the Defensive Player of the Week and USC’s Elise Ruddins was tabbed the league’s Freshman of the Week.

A junior outside hitter, Krista Vansant (Redlands, Calif.) helped the sixth-ranked Huskies pick up a pair of road wins, including their first win over a ranked opponent this season. In front of a packed house of more than 3,500 fans at 14th-ranked Illinois on Friday, she led the Huskies to a 3-1 win posting a match-high 19 kills and hitting .462, committing just one error. She also added 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. Two days later at Loyola Chicago, Vansant was error-free on 13 swings, putting down a team-high seven kills and also recording a career-high six service aces. She averaged just under five points per set (4.93), 3.71 kills, 2.86 digs and 0.43 blocks per set for the week, while hitting .481.

Sophomore Bianca Arellano (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded her fourth double-double on the year following her 13-dig, 32-assist performance in the straight-set upset victory over then-No. 2 and defending NCAA Champion Texas. It was only the second time in program history the Sun Devils had defeated a team ranked No. 2 or better, and the first time since defeating then-second ranked California in 2010. She also added a season-high six kills in the match. Arellano posted 40 assists and 20 digs in the five-set setback to host-No. 14 Illinois, after leading ASU to a win over Youngstown State to open the weekend by dishing out 29 assists. Arellano averaged 4.90 digs and 9.18 assists per set, as ASU went 3-1 at the Illini Classic.

Elise Ruddins (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) is the second Trojan this season to earn Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors after helping No. 1 USC to a pair of wins at the USD Tournament. She averaged 5.43 kills, 0.71 digs, 0.29 blocks and 5.57 points per set to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. In a four-set win against UC Santa Barbara, Ruddins posted 24 kills and hit an impressive .419, with just six errors on 43 swings. Later the same day, she had 14 kills (5 errors, 27 attempts) and hit .333 to help the Trojans sweep Eastern Washington. In her two matches, Ruddins posted 38 kills (5.43 kps) and scored 39.0 points (5.57 pps).

It is the third time Vansant has earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors and the 37th all-time weekly nod for a Husky. Arellano earns the weekly defensive nod for the first time in her career, as ASU garners its 18th weekly recognition all-time. It is the seventh freshman weekly award for a USC player and the second this season, as Ebony Nwanebu was selected the Conference’s Freshman of the Week for the opening week of the season.

Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women’s volleyball in 1986. It is the third year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive and rookie honoree.

The Sun Devils return home to host the ASU Marriott Invitational over the weekend, while Washington hosts a pair of matches this week, beginning with a contest against Coppin State on Thursday. USC kicks off a two-match week hosting UC Irvine on Wednesday, Sept. 18. That match will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
