11th-Ranked Bruins Travel Down the 405 to Face Long Beach State

The 11th-ranked Bruins head down the 405 Freeway to face Long Beach State at the Walter Pyramid on Wednesday at 7 p.m. A free audio broadcast will be available at, as well as Gametracker, with links available on the women’s volleyball schedule page.

The Bruins open up Pac-12 Conference play next week with a pair of televised matches. UCLA heads across town to take on fifth-ranked USC on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in a match which will be broadcast live on ESPNU. Free live audio will also be available for the matchup with the Trojans. The Bruins then head to Boulder for a tilt with Colorado on Friday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. PT. That contest will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks.

The Bruins remained at 11th for the second straight week in both national polls. UCLA earned 37 additional points in this week’s AVCA Top 25 poll to stay at 11th. The Bruins lost two points in the latest Volleyball Magazine Top 20 rankings, but remained at 11th.

Long Beach State brings a 5-4 record into Wednesday’s match, opening the season with three contests against teams which are currently ranked in the Top 25. The 49ers, hosting their own tournament, defeated Illinois, currently ranked #16 in four to open the year, but then in successive days fell to #17 Florida State in five and #19 Kentucky in three. Long Beach brings a three-match win streak into Wednesday’s contest. The 49ers are averaging 12.46 kills, 1.16 aces, 11.73 digs and 2.66 blocks per set, posting a .241 hitting percentage. Four players are averaging over 2.00 kps, led by senior Delainey Aigner-Swesey’s 3.54 to go with a team-best 2.51 dps. Sophomore Alex Reid is second with 2.84 kps, junior Haleigh Hampton is third with 2.42 kps and 1.17 bps and junior Chisom Okpala is fourth with 2.05 kps and first with 1.30 bps. Sophomore Erin Juley handles the setting duties and is averaging 9.89 assists per set. Brian Gimmillaro is in his 29th season as Long Beach’s head coach and has a record of 749-193. The Bruins and the 49ers have met 75 times, with the last matchup coming in Honolulu on Sept. 1, 2011, as UCLA posted a four-set victory.
