Tennis Wraps Up Day Two at Wolverine Invitational
ANN ARBOR, Mich.—The Arizona State women’s tennis team faced stiff competition, Saturday, at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Sun Devils played doubles against Purdue and Michigan, and then went on to compete against Notre Dame in singles.
“It was a long day of tennis and even though we lost more than we won today, it was a good test for us in both the singles and doubles,” said head coach Sheila McInerney. “I thought we improved from the first set of doubles matches in the morning against Purdue to the second set of doubles against Michigan.”
Against Purdue, sophomores Ebony Panoho and Stephanie Vlad won the lone doubles contest for the Sun Devils, 8-6. Later, the duo of Leighann Sahagun and Kassidy Jump defeated Michigan’s doubles team of Bolender/Lee, 8-4.
In singles, Vlad defeated No. 35 Brittney Sanders is a grind out, three-set match-up. The marquee victory for the sophomore battled out to 5-6 (1), 6-3, 6-5 (4) with two tie breakers. Sophomore Desirae Krawczyk also gritted it on the court, but fell to Notre Dame’s Quinn Gleason, 6-5 (4), 6-4.
“The singles matches against Notre Dame were tough as we had four, three-set matches and unfortunately we came out on the short end three times,” said McInerney. “Certainly we had our chances today, which will help us down the road. We are looking forward to a big test tomorrow playing Michigan.”
The Sun Devils wrap up play at the Wolverine Invitational, Sunday, with doubles against Tulane and singles against host Michigan.
