Buffs Host No. 11 UCLA In Conference Home Opener

BOULDER— The University of Colorado volleyball team will host No. 11 UCLA in its Pac-12 Conference home opener on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Coors Events Center. The contest is sponsored by State Farm.

The match will also be broadcast live regionally on the Pac-12 Network. Chris Marlowe will provide the play-by-play and legendary former coach Al Scates will serve as the color analyst. Live stats will be available at CUBuffs.com.  

Colorado is 8-2 overall (0-1 Pac-12) this season. The Buffs dropped their first match of the season on Aug. 30 against St. Mary’s and then went on to win eight straight matches before falling to Utah in five-sets on Tuesday night in the conference opener in Salt Lake City.  

Junior Taylor Simpson leads CU with 3.52 kills per set and sophomore Alexis Austin is second with 3.03 kills per set. Austin is attacking at a slightly higher percentage at .248, while Taylor has a .209 hitting percentage. The best percentage on the squad belongs to junior Kelsey English at .413, which ranks eighth in the Pac-12. She has recorded 64 kills and 14 errors on 121 attacks this season.

The offense is directed by sophomore Nicole Edelman. She has averaged 10.10 assists per set this season, the eighth best in the league, while helping the Buffs to a .263 attack percentage. Edelman has also added 27 kills of her own and is hitting .521.

Defensively true freshman Cierra Simpson has recorded 3.37 digs per set to rank 10th in the conference and senior Kerra Schroeder is second on the team with 2.76 digs per set. Taylor Simpson has also done well in the back row with 2.59 digs per set of her own. At the net, senior Nikki Lindow ranks third in the Pac-12 with 1.35 blocks per set and Taylor Simpson is second on the team with 0.62 blocks per set.

The Buffs have two ranked in the top-10 of the conference in service aces. English is seventh (0.38 service aces per set) and Cierra Simpson is ninth (0.37 service aces per set).

UCLA is currently ranked No. 11 in the latest AVCA Division I Coaches Poll after recording a 9-2 record to start the season. The Bruins fell 3-1 to in-town rival No. 4 USC on Wednesday night.

Karsta Lowe ranks fifth in the Pac-12 with 4.07 kills per set and is also hitting a team-best .377. Kelly Reeves ranks second on the team with 2.85 kills per set and Maddy Klineman adds 2.28 kills per set. Monica Stauber and Jordan Robbins have shared the setting duties this season. Stauber is averaging 5.24 assists per set in 41 sets and Robbins has seen time in 25 sets to average 5.96 assists per set. The Bruins are attacking at a .286 hitting efficiently which is fifth in the league.

UCLA is averaging 13.00 digs per set and is led by Reeves’ 3.03 digs per set and Karly Drolson adds 2.94 digs per set. Mariana Aquino has a team-best 1.20 blocks per set with includes five block solos and 44 block assists. Zoe Nightingale ranks second on the team with 0.92 blocks per set.  

The Bruins own a 7-0 all-time record against the Buffs.
