Buffs Set To Host Rocky Mountain Shootout

Sep 27, 2013

BOULDER —The University of Colorado men’s and women’s cross country teams will host the 28th Annual Rocky Mountain Shootout on Saturday, September 28 at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course on CU’s South Campus.

For the fifth straight year the Rocky Mountain Shootout will have two races. Open and unattached runners will compete in the same race at the collegiate competitors. The women’s 5.8-kilometer race will kick off the meet at 9 a.m. and the men’s 8k race will commence at 9:45 a.m.

The meet is one of the longest running collegiate cross country races in the nation and will have participants from some of the top NCAA Division I and Division II programs along the Front Range, which include Colorado’s third-ranked men and 15th-ranked women.

The shootout has two categories for team scoring. The NCAA Division I opponents are scored against each other, while the non-Division I opponents are scored as one, resulting in two team champions per gender. There is only one individual winner per gender.

CU’s men have won the last 22 shootout titles and 23 of the last 27. The last men’s Division I team to beat the Buffs was BYU in 1990. The women have won the previous 14 titles and 20 of the last 21 races.

Colorado captured three titles at last year’s shootout. Jake Hurysz was the men’s individual champion and both the men’s and women’s teams took the overall Division I titles, besting runner-up Wyoming on both sides.

The Buffaloes will race against Division I opponents Air Force and Northern Colorado at this year’s meet. Several other non-Division I schools, including the Division II No. 2 men and No. 4 women from Western State will compete at the meet.

Results will be available at Admission and parking are free.
