Cal Extends Undefeated Streak to 10 Games with USF Shutout

Sep 30, 2013

Cal vs. USF Box Score

  • This is Cal’s fourth shutout of the season.
  • Cal’s 10-game undefeated streak is the best start in more than a decade. In 2000, Cal went undefeated through 12 games before the Golden Bears lost to Washington 2-1 in game No. 13 of that season.
  • The Golden Bears have yet to allow an opponent to score in the first half.

SAN FRANCISCO – No. 11/15 California extended its undefeated streak to 10 games with a 3-0 shutout over San Francisco Monday evening at Negoesco Stadium on the USF campus. Cal upped its record to 7-0-3 as San Francisco drops to 5-4-2.

Determined not to settle for a fourth tie through ten games, the Golden Bears entered game No. 10 of the season with the intention to produce a consistent and committed offense from the get-go. Head coach Neil McGuire stressed the creation of quality scoring chances through passing, and the team delivered.

Cal outshot San Francisco 24-11, including a 17-6 command of the ball in the second half, and tallied 11 shots within the frame as Don keeper Madalyn Schiffel recorded eight saves in San Francisco’s second multiple-goal loss this season. Golden Bear goalie Emily Kruger (Woodside, Calif.) totaled five saves, and fellow senior goalie Kat Messinger (Dana Point, Calif.) also saw time in goal.

For most of the first half, the Golden Bears fought against an aggressive Don offense with a back-and-forth to each goal. With just three minutes left in the first, senior Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick (Pleasanton, Calif.) was finally able to put a ball away. With a pass from sophomore Celeste Martore (Castro Valley, Calif.), Fitzpatrick broke through a pair of defenders and shot from the center of the box from six yards out to send the Bears into halftime with the lead.

Entering halftime, the Bears owned only a slight edge in shots 7-5, while Kruger needed just one save through the first 45 minutes. As it has been routine this season, Cal reentered the game in the second half with even more focus and intensity to put the game away for good.

At 51:50, senior Ariana Martinez (Moorpark, Calif.) took the throw-in and tossed it across the field to Fitzpatrick, who played it into the box as junior Grace Leer (Danville, Calif.) turned and chipped it in for the score.

Fitzpatrick tallied another assist with a short cross to the left to a charging Ifeoma Onumonu (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), who broke away easily and drilled the ball into the net with plenty of room to secure Cal’s tenth-straight game without a loss.

Up next, Cal returns to Berkeley to begin a five-game homestand at Edwards Stadium. The Bears host their Pac-12 home opener Friday afternoon vs. Arizona State at 2 p.m., aired live on the Pac-12 Networks.
