Volleyball competition heats up in week two of conference play

The Conference season started off with a bang this past weekend and this week’s upcoming schedule looks to be no different as Pac-12 volleyball heads into its second week of league play ... Nine of the week’s 13 matches will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks, beginning with the matchup between No. 7 STANFORD and No. 16 UCLA on Wednesday ... The Pac-12 dominated the national poll again this week, with WASHINGTON claiming the top spot in the AVCA rankings and USC coming in at No. 2. The Huskies’ No. 1 ranking is the first since the end of the 2005 season when they won the national championship, and it is the ninth overall first-place ranking in team history. STANFORD remained stagnant at No. 7 for the second-straight week, while ARIZONA STATE moved up one spot to No. 15 and UCLA dropped to 16th. OREGON stayed at No. 21 and CALIFORNIA received votes but not enough to break the top 25 ... Highlighting the weekend are three matches between top-25 ranked teams. No. 7 Stanford travels to face the Bruins and Trojans, while No. 15 ARIZONA STATE hosts No. 21 OREGON. All matches will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks... COLORADO opens the week early with a Tuesday match at non-conference rival Wyoming after coming off of a historic weekend where CU upset then-No. 11 UCLA in five sets, their first win over a ranked opponent since 2008 ... No. 1 WASHINGTON remains undefeated through the first week of Conference play, and is one of only four undefeated teams so far in the nation. The Huskies travel to the Rockies this weekend, facing Colorado and UTAH... At least one Pac-12 team is ranked in all team statistical categories nationally, and at least one student-athlete is in the top 25 in all but one individual category. Washington leads the nation in aces per set (2.09) and in match win-loss percentage (1.000), while Stanford is tops in blocks per set at a 3.23 average. Of the individuals ranked in their respective categories, five are freshmen or sophomores ... UW’s Krista Vansant was voted the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this seaosn, while Colorado’s Nikki Lindow was tabbed the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, the first volleyball weekly honor for the Buffs since joining the league three years ago. USC’s Ebony Nwanebu is the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.
