Top-Ranked Huskies Visit Buffs And Utes

Oct 1, 2013

SEATTLE - Currently sitting atop the national rankings for the first time since 2005, the Husky volleyball team looks to extend its recent road success with a trip to the Mountain Time Zone where UW stops at Colorado (9-2, 1-1 Pac-12) on Friday and at Utah (12-2, 1-1 Pac-12) on Saturday. At 10-0 and 2-0 in the Pac-12, the Huskies are one of four teams in the nation without a defeat, though with just two losses apiece, the Buffs and Utes will pose a big challenge. Both matches get underway at 6 p.m. Pacific time, and Friday’s will be shown live on the Pac-12 Networks.

After an unorthodox opening weekend traveling to Pullman and Eugene with just one day in-between, the Huskies now settle into the more routine conference grind. Colorado upset UCLA last week in five sets for its first win over a ranked opponent since 2008. Utah won its Pac-12 opener against the Buffs in five sets, then lost a competitive three-setter at home to USC.

Washington earned impressive road wins last week at Washington State in straight sets and in four sets at No. 21 Oregon. The Huskies are now ranked No. 3 in the nation with a .337 attack percentage, and held the Cougars and Ducks to a combined .125 attack mark last week. Washington’s 21.5 blocks in the win at Oregon was its most in a four-set match in the last ten years.

Junior Krista Vansant earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week this week for the fourth time in her career. She led UW with 13 kills at WSU and 17 at Oregon, hitting .348 for the week. The win at Oregon was the first road win over a top-25 Pac-12 team for the Huskies since a 3-0 win at No. 6 UCLA in 2009. The 25-8 fourth set was also UW's best set against a Pac-12 opponent since holding Arizona State to a 30-7 score in a win in 2005.
