Engsted Nets Berth in Aggie Invitational Semis

DAVIS, Calif. – California sophomore Mads Engsted won his third consecutive match on Saturday to reach the semifinals at the Aggie Invitational held at the Marya Welch Tennis Center at UC Davis. The second seed in the Aggie Singles flight, Engsted defeated Santa Clara’s Ashot Khacharyan, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Engsted will face Oregon’s Kevin Farin in the semis at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. This is the second time in the tournament that a Golden Bear will play Farin, who beat Cal junior Nikhil Jayashankar in the round of 16.

Jack Sanford played Bryce McKelvie in the Big West Singles consolation quarterfinals, but the Cal junior fell to the Aggie, 6-3, 5-6, 1-0(7).

In the Aggie Doubles back draw quarterfinals, the Pacific team of Alex Hamilton/Eric Cederwall surpassed the Cal pair of junior Chase Melton and sophomore Wyatt Houghton in an injury walkover.

The Big West Doubles back draw also featured a Cal tandem, with the second-seeded pair of Jayashankar and Sanford besting Nathan Lewis and Thomas Hunt of Saint Mary’s, 8-5, in the quarterfinals. But the Bears fell to Portland’s Justin Guay/Kent Andreasen, 8-5, in the semis.

The Bears picked up three wins in the singles round robin on Saturday, as Jayashankar beat James Markiewicz of Saint Mary’s, 6-1, 6-4, Houghton bageled San Francisco’s Jason Lee, 6-0, 6-0, and sophomore Jordan Smith defeated Sacramento State’s Joaquin Marquez, 6-3, 6-0.
