Men?s Golf Takes Second at Firestone Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The Washington State University men's golf team concluded play with a second-place finish at the Firestone Invitational presented by FirstEnergy Solutions at Firestone Country Club's North Course.

The Cougars carded a 293 (+5) in the final round to finish second in the 17-team tournament with a total score of 873 (+9). WSU was the top Division I school and finished two strokes back from USC-Aiken (871, +7), the No. 5 team in Division II. Eastern Michigan rounded out the top three, shooting 11-over par (875), while touting the top individual finisher in Stuart Grehan (207, -9).

“I hit the ball the best I have in a long time, which was very satisfying,” redshirt junior Sang Lee said. “As a team, I feel like we had a solid week except for a few holes in the final round. We did a lot of good things and if we keep it up we should play well week in and week out.”

Lee led Washington State, shooting even with par (72) in the final round to finish tied for eighth place. Sophomore Bhurinat Songpaiboon carded a 219 (+3) in the tournament and tied for 21st. Senior Blake Snyder shot a team-low 71 (-1) in the third round to finish tied for 32nd. Juniors Charlie Mroz and Michael Anderson shot 221 (+5) and 227 (+11), respectively. Mroz tied for 27th, while Anderson tied for 57th.

“It's really disappointing not to win today,” Washington State Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “We had a rough finish and did not do a good job competing until the tournament was over and we were beat. I'm really happy that Sang played so well. He has been working extremely hard on his ball striking so it was good to see it paying off for him. We have some time to regroup and get ready for North Carolina. We have to be ready to play on a very tough golf course against a great field.”

The Cougars will have a one week respite before traveling to Greensboro, N.C., to conclude the fall season at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate Oct. 26 and 27.
