Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State women’s soccer team lost a tough battle to Arizona, Friday, with a final score of 2-0.

Today’s game was Oregon State’s “Kick Cancer” match, helping celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At the start of the game, Arizona’s Lexe Selman was honored for her tremendous courage and strength as she is a cancer survivor. Selman, former teammate of OSU’s Audrey Gibb, fought through cancer last year and returns as healthy competitor for the Arizona Wildcats for the 2013-14 season.

The game remained a 0-0 standstill through the first half, both teams pushing for a goal, but neither willing to give one up. In the 48th minute, Arizona’s Jazmin Ponce got ahold of the ball in the box and created a bit of space for herself. She was able to slip the ball past the hands of OSU’s Sammy Jo Prudhomme, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Later in the 84th minute, Arizona’s Alexandra Doller capitalized on a turnover within 25 yards of the goal and passed the ball into the back of the net, ending the game at 2-0.

“Today, we did not play up to our capabilities across the board,” said Head Coach Linus Rhode. “We started out slow and it took us a while to get a handle on the game; we’re much better than what we showed today.”

The Beavers now must prepare for Arizona State on Sunday, another tough match-up.

“We have to play our game, take care of the ball, and look to go forward more,” Rhode said. “When we do those things correctly, we are a very good team.”

Sunday’s match against Arizona State kicks off at 1 p.m. Pacific Time. Follow the game at
