Thomas Valente Takes First at Thunderbird Classic

Oct 12, 2013

The University of Arizona Wildcat men’s and No. 3 women’s cross country teams both had athletes compete at the Thunderbird Classic hosted by Mesa Community College on Saturday in Mesa, Ariz. The women ran 5,000 meters while the men ran 8,000 meters on the day.

The men’s race opened the day and junior Thomas Valente earned a first-place finish among Division I competitors. He clocked a time of 24:48.5 in the 8K. Junior Braden Timpe finished in second place with a time of 25:15.7. Freshman Travis Thorne’s time of 25:20.9 was good for third place. Sophomore Sam Willis took fifth place overall with a time of 25:38.4. Freshman Jeff Gautreau finished in eighth place with a time of 26:14.1. Freshmen Brendan Tinoco (ninth; 26:20.9) and Michael Cox (10th; 27:11.3) also ran for the UA men. The Wildcats were the only Division I program to field an entire team so they won the men’s competition with 15 points. Arizona State had three men that finished the race as well.

On the women’s side, Arizona had only two competitors run the 5,000-meter race. Freshman McKenna Gaffney took fifth place among the Division I competitors with a time of 18:31.1. Junior Daylee Burr’s time of 18:52.4 was good for sixth place overall. Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University also had competitors in the Division I section but neither of those programs fielded full teams either.
