Washington Announces 2014 Schedule

Oct 16, 2013

SEATTLE – The Washington Huskies announced their 2014 softball schedule Wednesday. Following their 3rd place finish at the 2013 Women’s College World Series, the Huskies will look to build on last year’s success, with a challenging conference and non-conference schedule in 2014. The Huskies will play 14 teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament last season, including three teams that qualified for the Women’s College World Series.

“The strength of the 2014 schedule is very good, and it will challenge us this season,” head coach Heather Tarr said. “This type of schedule allows us to compete against other top 10 and NCAA tournament teams throughout the non-conference. Competing against these teams prepares us to be ready when the PAC-12 season arrives.”

The Huskies will open the 2014 season on Feb. 7 against the Baylor Bears in the UNLV Sportco Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada. Baylor finished 3rd in the Big 12 in 2013 and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies will also play NCAA Regional participant Arkansas on Feb. 8 in the Kick-Off Classic, which takes place Feb. 7 - 9, and will be the Huskies first of five road tournaments to begin the season.

The Huskies will then play in the Little Wood Classic on Feb. 14 - 16 in Tempe, Ariz, where they are scheduled to face the Oklahoma Sooners, the 2013 National Champions, on February 15.

The Huskies will then take part in the Mary Nutter Classic on Feb. 20 – 22 in Palm Springs, Calif., their first of three consecutive tournaments in California. On the docket for the Huskies in the Mary Nutter Classic will be three NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago - LSU, BYU, and Texas, who qualified for the Women’s College World Series.

The Huskies will also play in the University of the Pacific tournament on Feb. 28 – March 2 in Stockton, Calif., and the Judi Garman Classic on March 6 – 9 in Fullerton, Calif. The schedules for those tournaments have yet to be finalized.

Following their five opening tournaments, the Huskies will open Pac-12 play against conference foe Utah on March 14 in their home opener at Husky Softball Stadium in Seattle. The Huskies finished 16-4 at home last season.

The Huskies will host four Pac-12 series at Husky Softball Stadium, three of which will come against teams that appeared in the postseason last year. The Huskies finished second in the Pac-12 last season with a record of 16-8 against conference opponents.

“Our home Pac-12 schedule gives our fans a chance to watch us play 4 weekends at home in Seattle,” Tarr said. “Our fan base loves to watch great softball and this year guarantees that opportunity for our community.”

After facing Utah, the Huskies will host UCLA on March 21 – 24. Last year, the Huskies traveled to Los Angeles and swept the Bruins, who finished 5th in the Pac-12 and earned a bid to the NCAA Regionals.

The Huskies will then have two conference series on the road, first against Oregon on March 28 – 30 in Eugene, Ore. and then against Stanford on April 11 – 13 in Palo Alto, Calif. The Ducks earned a trip to the 2013 NCAA Super Regionals, while the Cardinal qualified for the Regionals last year.

Between those two road trips, the Huskies will play at Seattle U on April 1 at 6 p.m. It will be the first time in the history of the Washington softball program that the Huskies play a road game in Seattle, as the game will be played at Logan Field on the campus of Seattle U. The Huskies were scheduled to play at Logan Field last year, but the game was cancelled due to rain.

The Huskies will return home on April 17 – 19 to play the Arizona State Sun Devils, whose 2013 postseason run ended in the WCWS.

The Huskies will make their second trip to Oregon on April 25 – 27, when they travel to Corvallis, Ore. to take on the Oregon State Beavers, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year.

In their final regular season home games of the 2014 schedule, the Huskies will host NCAA Regionals participant Arizona on May 2 -4.

The Huskies will wrap up their conference schedule against the Cal Bears, another 2013 postseason team, on May 8 – 10 in Berkeley, Calif.

The start times for all games will be announced in December.
