Bruins Beat San Diego in Season-Opening Meet

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - UCLA won 13 out of the 14 swimming races on Saturday in its season opener in San Diego, as the Bruins bested the Toreros 184.5-101.5. Senior Ting Quah, junior Noelle Tarazona and freshman Linnea Mack each won a pair of events.

The Bruins finished 1-2 in the meet opening 200 Medley Relay, as sophomore Katie Kinnear, freshman Brigitte Winkler, Quah and senior Kathryn Murphy swam a 1:43.77. Mack, junior Jessica Khojasteh, sophomore Madison Applegate and junior Taylor Carlson were second 1:45.40.

In the first individual race, senior Lauren Baker (10:05.85) and sophomore Katy Campbell (10:10.52) posted the top two times in the 1000 Freestyle. Tarazona followed that with a victory in the 200 Free in a time of 1:53.27.

In her first individual race as a collegiate swimmer, Mack won the 100 Backstroke in a time of 55.75. The Bruins had the top three times, as seniors Anna Senko (57.94) and Jesse Bergman (58.81) finished second and third.

Another freshman would win the next race, as Winkler swam a 1:05.19 in the 100 Breaststroke, leading a 1-2 finish with Khojasteh (1:07.16). Freshman Ashley Tse was exhibitioned and had the second-best time in the event at 1:05.77.

Quah claimed the 200 Butterfly in a time of 2:01.12 and led another 1-2 Bruin finish with Kinnear (2:01.66). Mack then won her second race of the day, the 50 Free in a time of 23.61, with fellow freshman Rachel Owen placing second at 24.77.

In the 100 Free, Khojasteh (52.52) and Carlson (52.92) led the Bruins to another 1-2 finish. Kinnear followed with her first victory of the year in the 200 Back with a time of 2:03.61. Freshman Nina Hayes was second (2:08.75) and freshman Hayden Walker tied for third (2:09.89).

Tse posted her first career victory in the 200 Breast in a time of 2:21.40, as Winkler placed second (2:23.39). Quah won the 500 Free in a time of 4:56.94, with Campbell recording the second-best time of 4:59.96.

Tarazona became the third Bruin to win a second race of the meet, taking the 100 Fly in a time of 56.55. Senko placed second at 57.04. San Diego would win its first race of the meet in the 400 Individual Medley, as sophomore Arlyn Upshaw (4:24.76), Baker (4:29.40) and Tse (4:34.33) finished 2-3-4.

The meet concluded with the quartet of Tarazona, Khojasteh, Carlson and junior Ally Loper winning the 400 Freestyle Relay in a time of 3:32.64.

The swimming and diving team opens its home schedule with a quad meet at Spieker Aquatics Center on Friday, Nov. 1 against Oregon State, UC Santa Barbara and Florida Gulf Coast. The meet begins at 12 p.m.
