Bruins Sweep Titles at USTA/ITA Southwest Regionals

Oct 21, 2013

San Diego, Calif. - The UCLA women's tennis team completed a remarkable run at the 2013 USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Monday afternoon at San Diego State University's Aztec Tennis Center, as Bruin players took home both the singles and doubles titles.

The day began with the doubles final, where UCLA's Jennifer Brady and Catherine Harrison squared off against USC's Brynn Boren and Zoe Katz. Brady and Harrison, who knocked off top-seeded and defending NCAA Champions Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria of USC in the semifinals on Sunday, had their second-straight dominating performance, downing the second-seeded Boren and Katz, 8-2 to claim the title. With the victory, Brady and Harrison, who were seeded fourth in the doubles draw, have earned direct acceptance into the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 7-10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Brady didn't have much time to rest before having to play in the women's singles final where she met teammate Chanelle Van Nguyen. This meeting would go to the upperclassman, as the ninth-seeded Van Nguyen posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over her freshman teammate for the singles championship. Van Nguyen, who lost just one set in her six wins in San Diego, has also earned a spot into the National Indoor Intercollegiates next month in New York.
