Brunner Named Pac-12 Defensive Player Of The Week

Oct 22, 2013
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – University of Colorado goalkeeper Annie Brunner was named Defensive Player of the Week for Pac-12 Women’s Soccer for the week of Oct. 14-20, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Tuesday.

Brunner, a senior from Arvada, Colo., earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording a season-high seven saves to help the Buffaloes tie the No. 9 California Golden Bears 1-1 last Saturday. For over 89 minutes, Brunner and the Buffs’ backline kept the Bears, who have fallen just once this season, scoreless.

Though a yellow card foul against the Buffs in the final minute of regulation helped the Bears even the score, Brunner grabbed three saves through two overtimes to hold the draw. The last time the Buffs tied a ranked opponent was in the 2010 Big 12 Tournament, when Brunner and her teammates pushed No. 6 Texas A&M to a 0-0 double overtime draw.

Brunner is capping her impressive four-year career with a stellar senior campaign. In the net, she’s helped the Buffs break numerous records, including five shutouts and six straight wins to begin the season. With 11 wins already in 2013, Brunner has become just one of three CU keepers to record that many victories in a single season, and the first to do so since 2008.

Brunner and 2003 Big 12 Championship team member Jessica Keller are the only two CU keepers to have three seasons with at least eight wins each year and back-to-back seasons with at least seven shutouts. Brunner ranks in the all-time top five at CU for wins, saves, shutouts and goals-against average. With over 6,000 minutes played, Brunner ranks ninth all-time at CU and 13th among active goalkeepers in the nation.

This is Brunner’s third conference Defensive Player of the Week honor, and second since the Buffs joined the Pac-12 Conference. Brunner earned Big 12 POW honors as a freshman when she helped the Buffs to a 2-1 overtime win over No. 6 Texas A&M (the Buffs’ first regular season victory over the Aggies, and most recent win over a ranked opponent) and a 0-0 draw against Texas. Last season, on her way to a then-record-setting three shutouts to begin the season, Brunner earned Pac-12 POW honors. The honor is the first Pac-12 Player of the Week title for CU this season and third overall.
