Pac-12 Women's Basketball Media Day Recap

Oct 24, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO – Fresh off an NCAA Final Four season, the California women's basketball team received 111 points and a first-place vote as Stanford and the Golden Bears were unanimously voted to finish 1-2 in the 2013-14 Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll.

Stanford received the other 11 first-place votes, and Colorado, Washington and UCLA rounded out the top five of the poll. Six through 12 were USC, Utah, Oregon State, Washington State, Arizona State, Arizona and Oregon.

The Golden Bears went 32-4 last season and won a share of the first Pac-12 regular season title in program history with a 17-1 conference record. The Golden Bears return seven letterwinners and three starters, including preseason national player of the year candidates Brittany Boyd and Gennifer Brandon.

Boyd and Brandon have both been named to the Wooden Award and Wade Trophy preseason watch lists.

“We’re a long way from Nashville (site of the 2014 NCAA Final Four) or from cutting down Pac-12 Championship nets,” Associate Head Coach Charmin Smith said at the Pac-12 Media Day Thursday afternoon. “Do we think we have potential to do that? Yes. But we understand this process, and we’re excited about being on another journey to accomplish those things.”

The Bears open the year with a free exhibition game on Friday, Nov. 1 against Vanguard before beginning the regular season a week later against Long Beach State. Single game, season ticket and mini-plan packages are available through the Cal Athletic Ticket Office, online or by calling 1-800-GO-BEARS.
