'The Dawgfather' honored by Husky faithful

Washington's football family took the field with heavy hearts Saturday as they faced Cal in Seattle. Since the passing of the program's legendary former coach and patriarch Don James last Sunday, former colleagues, UW players and coaches from around the country have shared their fond memories of "The Dawgfather." The remembrances reached a crescendo on Saturday in the place James called home for 18 seasons: Husky Stadium.

Memorial decals and patches with James' initials adorned the field, Washington's helmets and sideline gear. In a reverent move, the Golden Bears sported their own version of the memorial sticker on their helmets.

The most emotional moment of the night came moments before kickoff as the former coach's widow and children acted as honorary team captains for a pregame coin flip.

At halftime, the UW marching band performed "A Tribute to the Dawgfather" including former Husky alums and a memorial video.

A public memorial service is scheduled for James on Sunday at 3 p.m. PT at Alaska Airlines Arena. The ceremony will live stream on GoHuskies.com.
