Cal Goes 5-1 at Saint Mary's 7s

Oct 27, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO - The Golden Bears recovered from a four-point loss to the Gaels in the cup semifinal with a 43-5 victory over Western Washington to claim third place Sunday at the Saint Mary's Sevens Invitational Tournament.Having begun Sunday's knockout rounds with a 12-0 quarterfinal win against Arizona State, California exited the two-day event at San Francisco Golden Gate's Ray Sheeran Field on Treasure Island with 27 players contributing to five victories as well as the tournament's best points differential (+126), most tries (28) and most points scored (174)."Short of winning the tournament, we accomplished many of the goals we had for the weekend, specifically those around development opportunities," said coach Tom Billups."We got to see a lot of guys play and came away with a lot of lessons learned," agreed Jake Anderson.Cal was on the attack early in the quarterfinal against the Sun Devils, knock-ons by Russell Webb and Harry Adolphus stymied the Bears in cold and damp conditions. On defense following that second infraction, the Bears' cover defense created an ASU turnover and sophomore Anthony Salaber scored a try. A second-half try and conversion by Webb rounded out the scoring.Against the Gaels in the semifinal, Cal's Alec Gletzer possessed the opening kickoff and advanced 20 meters as the Bears worked through several phases to set up Andrew Battaglia for the game's first try. Webb could not connect on the conversion attempt from the left corner.Cal forced a Saint Mary's turnover on the ensuing kickoff, leading to Brad Harrington's try one minute later, but again, Webb could not convert from the left side, leaving the score 10-0. A try by the Gaels' Garrett Brewer under the posts allowed Joey Reavy to convert for a halftime score of 10-7, Bears. The second half put Cal on the back foot when Webb's kickoff did not travel 10 meters, allowing an SMC restart from midfield. Holden Yungart scored a converted try two minutes later to give the Gaels the lead.Saint Mary's took its lead to 21-17 on a converted try by Kevin O'Connor before Jesse Milne intercepted a Gaels pass for his try, which was converted by Webb. But Cal would not have enough time to mount a final charge. In the consolation final, Western Washington took an early lead on Ollie Daughtery's try before Cal scored seven consecutive tries, including three by Andre Coquillard and two from Nicklas Boyer, to run away from the Vikings."We really appreciated the invite and thought it was a really well-run event," said head coach Jack Clark. "We got through the tournament in pretty good shape physically and we look forward to our final event of the fall at the PAC 7s conference championship."The Bears (8-2) will be back to work Monday on Witter Rugby Field to prepare for the conference tournament Nov. 2-3 in Los Angeles. The Scoring Timeline vs. Arizona State04:00 Anthony Salaber 5Halftime Score: California 5, Arizona State 010:00 Russell Webb 5, 2Final Score: California 12, Arizona State 0The Team vs. Arizona State1.
