EUGENE, Ore. – Despite a career-high five-save performance from Kat Messinger (Dana Point, Calif.) No. 12/20 California’s bid to beat Oregon in Duck territory fell short as dropped its second consecutive road game, 1-0, on Monday evening at Pape Field in Eugene. Cal is now 9-3-5 overall and 2-3-3 in Pac-12 play with the loss.
Messinger earned her first career start as regular Cal starter Emily Kruger (Woodside, Calif.) was sidelined due to injury and made the most of her 90 minutes between the posts, tallying a career-high five saves while the Ducks produced six shots on frame and 13 overall.
The Bears outshot the Ducks with 17 chances, including seven on goal, but could not get past Oregon goalie Abby Steele, whose saves count included one crucial penalty kick in the 49th minute. Senior Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick (Pleasanton, Calif.) led the Bears with three shots on frame, followed by sophomore Ifeoma Onumonu (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) with two of her own.
Despite several good looks at the goal, Cal’s best scoring chance came at 49:17 as Onumonu was fouled and the Bears were awarded a penalty kick. Fitzpatrick took the chance to convert, placing the ball perfectly in a small space near the right post before Steele took an impressive dive at it to stop the ball.
Instead, Oregon commanded the lead just five minutes later when Maryn Beutler took a shot from outside the box and placed her shot in the bottom-right corner of the net to make it 1-0 in the Ducks’ favor.
Cal attempted a comeback, nearly succeeding with a flurry of three corner kicks in the 85th minute, but the Bears were unable to capitalize for the equalizer.
The Bears continue play in the Pacific Northwest with a match against Washington State on Friday at 2 p.m. in Pullman, Wash.
