Ducks Finish Play at Easley Memorial Classic

Nov 3, 2013

LAS VEGAS -- The University of Oregon men’s tennis team was represented in both of Sunday’s finals matches at the Easley Memorial Classic, hosted by UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Ducks came up short in a three-set singles finale and in a doubles finals match that went to a tie-breaker.

Oregon finished with 12 wins on the weekend and played in its third and fourth main draw finals matches of the fall season. Sophomore Kevin Farin competed in singles and teamed with senior Robin Cambier in doubles.

“We played almost as good as we could today in doubles,” said head coach Nils Schyllander. “(The opponents) came up with some huge shots, but it could have gone either way. It was a very well played match. In singles, Kevin battled and showed a lot of heart but all the tennis he’s played this week caught up to him. All-in-all, he had a phenomenal weekend.”

Farin won three straight singles matches to meet Auburn’s Dan Cochrane, ranked 105th nationally, in the Flight A finals match. The Brussels, Belgium, native played well to take the first set 7-5. Cochrane rallied to a three-set win, claiming both of the final sets by a 6-3 margin. Farin defeated 75th-ranked Lukas Ollert in the semifinals and No. 76 Ace Matias in the quarterfinals.

Farin is 7-3 in singles play this fall and has reached the semifinals in two tournaments so far.

Cambier and Farin met Auburn’s Ollert and Dennis Lengsfeld in the doubles finals after cruising to three straight wins. The back and forth match went into a tie-breaker before the Auburn team prevailed, 8-7 (3). Cambier and Farin have a team-high eight doubles victories together and have reached the semifinals in two tournaments.

The Ducks close the fall campaign with the Nordstrom Open, Nov. 15-18, in Seattle, Wash.
