Cal issues statement regarding football locker room incident

Nov 5, 2013

Cal Athletics is cooperating with an investigation into a locker room incident that sent one player to the hospital, according to a statement provided to media members prior to coach Sonny Dykes' regularly scheduled weekly press conference on Tuesday.

The statement also clarified the coaching staff's reaction to the incident in its immediate aftermath. "A Cal physician, coach and administrator each contacted the player's family prior to [the family's] arrival at the hospital," according to the statement. A coach visited with the injured player and his family in the hospital, too.

SFGate.com reported details of the incident early Tuesday.

Dykes did not address the incident directly during his press conference, but did describe the overall culture of his team as positive.

"Obviously we've had a disappointing season," Dykes said of his 1-8 team. "But our kids go out there every Saturday and they play hard, [which] speaks to our character."
