Hayley Hughes Earns Academic All-District Honors

Nov 5, 2013

BOULDER – University of Colorado soccer co-captain Hayley Hughes continues to earn academic recognition, receiving Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District VII Second Team honors for the 2013-14 season. The senior from Highlands Ranch, Colo. has now earned five academic honors in her time as a Buffalo.

To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. Hughes, who majors in finance in the CU Leeds School of Business, with a minor in economics and a certificate in quantitative finance, holds a 3.93 cumulative GPA. Hughes is one of 13 Pac-12 Conference women’s soccer players selected for First or Second Team honors.

In her final season, Hughes has become an important part of the Buffs’ defense, starting all 19 games as the Buffs broke numerous records. CU began the season with five straight shutouts and six consecutive wins as the Buffs went on to win eight non-conference games, all program firsts. Hughes’ lone goal in 2013 was a big one – as she netted the game-winner in the Buffs’ 1-0 victory over Oregon to help the squad to its first ever back-to-back Pac-12 home wins.

In four seasons, Hughes has played in all but one of the Buffs’ games, helping her rank in CU’s all-time top 10 in minutes and games started and the top 13 in games played.

The honor is Hughes’ second from Capital One CoSIDA, earning first-team All-District VII honors as a junior. Hughes is also a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic First Team selection, earning back-to-back honors as a sophomore and junior, becoming the first soccer Buff to do so in the Pac-12 Conference. Last season, Hughes added to her academic honors as an NSCAA Scholar All-West Region Honorable Mention.
