Beavs Beat Bakersfield Behind Hunter's Double-Double

November 12, 2013 | Women's Basketball

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sophomore Deven Hunter recorded her first career double-double with a 13-point, 13-rebound effort and the Oregon State women's basketball team dominated Bakersfield down low as the Beavers took home an 80-49 win over the Roadrunners on Monday evening in Gill Coliseum.

Oregon State scored 40 points in the paint while holding Bakersfield to just 12 and out-rebounded their opponent by 22 for the second consecutive game, pulling down 59 to the 'Runners' 37. CSUB was held to just 49 points after posting 91 in their season-opener last Saturday and was able to convert only 24.2 percent of their attempts from the floor.

Hunter set the tone for Oregon State from the outset and had equally efficient minutes in both halves. She scored six and grabbed five rebounds in the opening 20 minutes and put up seven and eight in the second.

After OSU opened up its first double-digit lead of the game around the 8:00-minute mark of the first half, Hunter grew the advantage even more when she fought for an offensive rebound off of a missed free throw. Her first lay-in attempt was off the mark, but she was able to get the board on her own miss and flip it in to put the Beavers up 28-16. Bakersfield would cut the lead to 10 points on a couple of occasions before intermission, but it would never get below double digits the rest of the way.

“Deven is a big-time player and a big-time athlete,” Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck said of Hunter. “She's learning to love this game in a lot of ways and learning what she's capable of. She's making the hustle plays. Anybody who is getting six offensive rebounds and 13 total – that's a warrior and we need that. That's what it takes to be successful at this level and Deven set the tone for us tonight.”

Oregon State ended the first half on a 16-3 run over the period's final five minutes to take a 48-25 lead into the break. During the opening 20 minutes, the Beavers made 16 of their 19 shots from the free throw line, more than they converted in any game all of last season.

The Beavers used another extended run in the second half to put the game to rest, going on a 12-2 spurt beginning with a Gabriella Hanson 3-pointer at the 11:27 mark and ending with a Hunter free throw with 5:39 on the clock. Over that span, Oregon State held Bakersfield to just 1-of-10 shooting. In the entire second half, the Roadrunners were only successful on six of their 32 shots from the floor (18.8 percent).

Bakersfield's Tyonna Outland scored 20 of her team's 49 points on 7-for-14 shooting. The Beavers were more equitable with their scoring distribution. Freshman Sydney Wiese (10) joined Hunter in double-figures, but OSU had seven other players that tallied at least six points.

Kolbie Orum and Ali Gibson each added nine, Ruth Hamblin and Breanna Brown put in eight while Samantha Siegner, Hanson and Alyssa Martin contributed six apiece.

“This preseason is vital for us,” Rueck added. “Tonight's test was a great one and we learned some lessons. It was fun to see us go through the peaks and valleys of this game. Every game is its own world it seems. We battled through some droughts, but it's who we are. We have a lot of youth out here. We are figuring things out and I liked our progress.”

The top blocking team in the Pac-12 the last three seasons, OSU swatted 10 of Bakersfield 62 shot attempts. Hamblin had three for the second consecutive game as Oregon State reach double digits in that category for the first time this year. A season ago, the Beavers had four games with 10+ blocks after doing it a school-record five times in 2011-12.

With the result, Oregon State won its first two games of the season each by more than 30 points for the second time in three years, also accomplishing that feat against Western Oregon and Montana State in Nov. 2011. That was also the last time the Beavers posted back-to-back wins of at least 30 points.

Oregon State returns to Ralph Miller Court on Friday, Nov. 15 when they host Sacramento State at 11:30 a.m.
