TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona women’s golf has added local star Krystal Quihuis to its roster for the 2014-15 season as the Tucson native inked her National Letter of Intent late Thursday. Quihuis attends Salpointe Catholic High School and will graduate in May.
She won Arizona state titles in 2011 and 2012 while earning a runner-up finish in 2013 while competing for the Lancers.
“Krystal is a proven champion,” head coach Laura Ianello said. “She’s a local talent and it’s very important that we keep the best golfers in-state. She’ll be a great addition to our team. We don’t have any seniors this year so we have a good idea of what we’re capable of in 2014-15. We’re very excited to welcome Krystal to the Wildcat family.”
The Southern Arizona Junior Golf Association (SAJGA) recognizes the female high school golfers with the lowest stroke averages relative the adjusted course ratings of the courses they played. Announced earlier this week, Quihuis won the Gary P. Durrenberger Award for the second-straight year.
During the summer of 2013, Quihuis won the Heather Farr event in Phoenix, escalating her up the junior rankings. She was selected to play in the Wyndham Cup on the West Team at The Bridges in California and went undefeated in her matches. She then was selected to compete in the Junior Solheim Cup in Denver, Colo. and also went undefeated in her matches, helping the U.S. team to clinch the victory with her made 25-foot birdie.
The Wildcats begin the 2014 spring schedule with the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, hosted by Ohio State, in Palos Verdes, Calif. (Feb. 9-11).
