Arizona's Cordes and Quintero named Pac-12 Swimmer and Diver of the month

Dec 12, 2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA swept the opening men’s Pac-12 Swimmer and Diver of the Month awards as junior Kevin Cordes and sophomore Rafael Quintero received the honors for the month of November, the Conference office announced today.

Cordes (Naperville, Ill.) is currently undefeated on the dual season as he has placed first in each of his individual events in the breaststroke up to this point. The junior won the individual 100 and 200 breast competitions in all three dual meets through the month of November. He also swam the breaststroke leg of the winning 400 medley relay team versus Utah, as well as the 200 medley relay team versus UNLV.

Quintero (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) has already earned six first-place finishes this season, including winning the platform competition at the Wildcat Diving Invite for the second-straight year. In that same event, the reigning Pac-12 Men’s Diving Newcomer of the Year also placed first in the 3-meter springboard along with a third-place finish on the 1-meter. His four other victories have come twice in the 1-meter and twice in the 3-meter, both versus USC and UNLV. In the dual meet against Utah, Quintero placed second on the 1-meter and third in the 3-meter.

Cordes has now earned Swimmer of the Month a league-record four times throughout his career at Arizona, receiving the honor twice as a sophomore and once as a freshman. Quintero’s honor is his first-career Diver of the Month accolade. The honors mark UA’s ninth and fourth Swimmer and Diver of the Month all-time, respectively.

The month of December will see the Wildcats competing in the Texas Invite, which wrapped up this past weekend, before heading to the USA Diving Nationals in Austin, Texas.
