Roundup: Dawgs in Final Four; 'Zona, Ducks still undefeated

Washington Athletics

Some Elite 8 volleyball match between USC and Washington last weekend, with the Huskies rallying from two sets down and fighting off two match points to best the Women of Troy and advance to the Final Four, which is conveniently in Seattle this year. With that, a headline that reads “Huskies come back and coming home for Final Four” seems pretty fitting. Howsabout Krista Vansant, y’all? The Pac-12 POTY had 38 kills and 30 digs, the first 30-30 performance in U-Dub NCAA tourney history. That’s doin’ serious work.

Gutsy win for the No. 1 Cats in Ann Arbor this past weekend, beating the Wolverines 72-70 to remain undefeated. They were tested many a time Saturday, falling behind by eight with seven minutes to go. However, as Chantel Jennings points out for ESPN’s Men’s College Basketball Nation Blog, Arizona is playing with top-ranked poise.

Big props to former Stanford defensive back Michael Thomas for helping the Miami Dolphins fend off the Patriots yesterday, intercepting a Tom Brady pass to seal the deal in his first-ever regular season NFL game. With injuries in the secondary, Miami signed Thomas from the 49ers’ practice squad earlier this week. Keeping it on the NFL tip, many NFL teams would love to have the Cardinal head coach as their own, but sources tell Adam Schefter that David Shaw will remain at Stanford.

Arizona State

Arizona State backup quarterback Michael Eubank will transfer to another school, Todd Graham said after practice Friday. Eubank was one of three guys in the running for the starting QB gig in 2012 fall camp before Taylor Kelly earned the job.

Silas Redd has been banged up all year, and now Redd is likely to miss USC’s bowl game against Fresno State because of a knee injury.

Oregon State

Just a lil’ more than a week ‘til Oregon State’s bowl game, and in the Hawai’i Bowl against Boise State, Beavers rushers hope to build off a memorable Civil War performance, when OSU ran for 231 yards.

The results have been good so far, so UCLA football plans to return to San Bernardino for training camp.

Washington State

Here’s a nice infographic of the Washington State and Colorado State offensive and defensive lines to get you prepped for the New Mexico Bowl this Saturday.

Big win for Oregon over Illinois in Portland on Saturday, beating the Illini 71-64. At 9-0, you’d think things couldn’t get better, right? Wrong, because high-scoring Oregon is talented, unbeaten and about to get even better with Dominic Artis and Ben Carter returning to the lineup now that their nine game suspensions are up.

With that men’s hoops win over Elon in the books, the Buffs have their focus on finals. That time of year — best of luck on the papers and exams, y’all (quick sidenote — I always found a way to take classes that had final papers instead of final exams; that way I could finish early and give myself a longer break).

Huge W for Utah against the rival Cougars in men’s basketball Saturday night, and the Utes are savoring the signature win over BYU; 81-64 the final.

Cal women’s basketball won its sixth straight game by defeating Cal State Bakersfield 70-51 Sunday behind 11 three-pointers, tying a school record.
