Southern Scuffle Day 1: Latham and Pena Undefeated

Chattanooga, Tenn. – RJ Pena (157) and Joe Latham (174) remain in the championships brackets after the first day at the Southern Scuffle. Both Pena and Latham are set to wrestle in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

The Beavers currently sit in ninth place after the first day of competition, earning 28.5 team points.

Oregon State featured 14 of its wrestlers in the tournament, 10 of which will continue on to wrestle tomorrow: Jack Hathaway (133), Scott Sakaguchi (149), Jared Reis (149), Pena (157), Jordan Henrickson (157), Alex Elder (165), Latham (174), Austin Morehead (184), Taylor Meeks (197), and Amarveer Dhesi (HWT).

Both Pena and Latham remain undefeated for Oregon State through the first day of competition, advancing them to the championship bracket quarterfinals. Pena collected two decision victories over Minnesota’s Brandon Kingsley and Iowa State’s John Nicholson. Latham tallied a 13-3 major decision victory over Hofstra’s Victor Pozsonyi, followed by a 7-1 decision over Arizona State’s Kevin Radford.

The championship bracket quarterfinals and consolation round four matches are set for tomorrow at 6 a.m. Pacific Time. That will be followed by consolation rounds five and six, championship semifinals, consolation quarterfinals and semifinals, and championship finals and medal matches.
