Cal Divers Head to Bruin Invitational

Divers for Cal’s top-ranked women’s swimming & diving team will take center stage this week when they head to Los Angeles for the Bruin Invitational Friday-Sunday.

Competition gets underway Friday at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatics Center with the 1-meter preliminaries at 11 a.m. The 3-meter preliminaries start Saturday at 11 a.m., with platform diving beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Finals will follow prelims each day.

Diving coach Todd Mulzet will bring his full contingent of divers to the meet, which will also feature Pac-12 teams UCLA, USC and Utah, in addition to Fresno State, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, UC Davis and Boise State.

The Bears are led by senior Kahley Rowell, who placed eighth on platform at the NCAA Championships last year. She was Cal’s top finisher at the 2013 Pac-12 meet, finishing 16th on 1-meter, 15th on 3-meter and third on platform. Sophomore Sara-Lina Boushakra was also fourth on platform at the conference championships.

Last year at the Bruin Invitational, Boushakra produced Cal’s top spot, taking seventh on platform with Rowell in eighth. Boushakra also paced the Bears on the 3-meter board (17th), while Anne Kastler was 12th on 1-meter.

Pac-12 Season Nearly Here: The start of the New Year means that the Pac-12 season is right around the corner, and the Bears are gearing up for a 23-day stretch when they will meet five of their conference rivals in dual meets. Cal starts off at home with Arizona State and Arizona Jan. 24-25, before traveling to Los Angeles to face USC and UCLA Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. The Bears then visit Stanford Feb. 15 before the Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Wash., Feb. 26-March 1.

Time to Tune in on the Bears: Four of Cal’s five Pac-12 dual meets, as well as the Pac-12 Championships, will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. The Jan. 24 match-up with Arizona State gets underway at 12 noon at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley and will be aired live. The following day, the Cal-Arizona meet will be shown on a same-day delay at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 25. Broadcast schedules for the remaining meets will be announced by the Pac-12 at a later date.

Last Time Out: Cal swimmers past and present accumulated 11 victories at the AT&T Winter Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn., Dec. 5-7. Missy Franklin captured the 100 back and 200 free, Elizabeth Pelton won the 200 back and 200 IM, Celina Li took the 400 IM and Golden Bear alum Natalie Coughlin claimed the 50 and 100 free. In addition, Cal prevailed in four of the five relays - 200 and 400 medley relay and 400 and 800 free relay. Franklin established a pair of school records, first with a runner-up finish in the 500 free (4;34.63) and then in the 200 free (1:41.40). All told, the Bears recorded 11 NCAA A standard individual swims, with each of the five relays also going under the A standard. Franklin, who was the high-point scorer, was named the National Swimmer of the Week by for her performance.
