Roundup: Wildcats match best start in program history

Jan 10, 2014

Pauley Pavilion hosted the Pac-12's marquee event last night, a traditional showdown between top-ranked Arizona and UCLA. The Wildcats (16-0, 3-0) prevailed 79-75 to match their best start in school history. Doug Haller has the full reaction from Westwood.

Up in Corvallis, Oregon State beat Stanford on the hardwood for the first time in four tries. The Beavers prevailed 81-72, thanks in large part to Eric Moreland's 17-point, 15-rebound, four-block, four-assist performance. Connor Letourneau calls him a "ball of energy."

The result wasn't as pretty for the home team just down the road in Eugene, where Cal waltzed into Matthew Knight Arena and upended the Ducks 96-83. Andrew Greif examined the Ducks' defensive problems.

The Wildcats are obviously the main basketball attraction in the Desert so far this year, but counterpart Arizona State (13-3, 2-1) isn't playing shabby ball, either. The Sun Devils delivered a 79-60 rout of USC.

UCLA may have lost to top-ranked Arizona, but they did have legendary Pauley Pavilion rocking again on Thursday night.

While Stanford didn't get good news on the basketball court, they did in the football office: Linebacker A.J. Tarpley and defensive end Henry Anderson announced they are returning for their fifth years.

New Washington coach Chris Petersen and his staff are busy trying to salvage the recruiting class left behind by Steve Sarkisian.

Washington State athletic director Bill Moos said that he anticipates a record deficit that may exceed $10 million for the current fiscal year. All the details on the financial trouble in the Palouse are here.

Utah lost to Washington in a heartbreaker this week, but there was a bright spot: Guard Delon Wright's one-man show featured 27 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals. Dirk Facer sums up Wright's fantastic night.

Ted Miller has finished his report card for 2013 Colorado football. How did the Buffs fare in Mike MacIntyre's first season at the helm? This evaluation is consistent across the board.
