Bruin Tennis Players Kick Off 2014 Season This Week
LOS ANGELES - Members of the UCLA men's and women's tennis teams kick off their 2014 seasons this week, with players headed to three separate tournaments throughout the Southwest.
The Bruin women are sending four players to the National Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Sunrise Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Kaitlin Ray, Chanelle Van Nguyen, Courtney Dolehide and Kelly Shaffer will all be competing in singles at that event. Ray and Shaffer will be teaming together in doubles, as will Dolehide and Van Nguyen. The event runs from Friday to Sunday.
Also in action this weekend for the women will be Robin Anderson, Catherine Harrison, Kyle McPhillips, Jennifer Brady and Morgan Thomas, as those players will be taking part at the Freeman Memorial Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. at UNLV's Frank and Vicki Fertitta Tennis Complex. In addition to singles, Anderson and Brady, the No. 1 doubles team in America, will be teaming together in doubles at that event. Harrison and McPhillips will also be vying for the doubles title.
The UCLA men's team has just one tournament on its plate this week, as players head to the Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the beautiful Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Clay Thompson is the No. 1 seed in the 32-player men's singles draw. Marcos Giron and Mackenzie McDonald at seeded No. 1 in the 16-team doubles event. In all, eight Bruin players will be headed to the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, which also features players from national powers USC, Baylor and Stanford.
