Gym Devils Dominate Quad Meet with Season-High Score of 195.900

SEATTLE, Wash.—With the word potential tossed around after the team’s first meet, the Arizona State women’s gymnastics team’s potential came to fruition, Saturday, in a quad-meet win against Washington, San Jose State and UC Davis in Seattle, Wash. 

The Gym Devils scored a team total of 195.900 after hitting 23 of 24 routines and showed the team’s potential when all four events are executing at a high level. For the second-straight meet, the Sun Devils scored over 49 on vault. 

Benefiting from the rotation draw, ASU finished the meet on its strongest event this season and scored a total of 49.050 in back-to-back meets. Sophomore Allie Salas recorded a career-high 9.875 on vault to lead a Sun Devil line-up that counted four scores of 9.8 and above.

The biggest reversal in fortune came on floor, where the Sun Devils had struggled the week before. ASU scored a season-high 49.150 in the event, eclipsing the previous week’s total of 47.875. Sophomore Risa Perez led the Gym Devils for the second-straight meet and scored a career-high 9.875. The team was able to count five scores above 9.8 and had the benefit of dropping a low score of 9.775. 

Sophomore Carissa Kraus once again took home the bar title at the meet with a score of 9.875. Kraus scored a career high of 9.900 in the team’s season opening meet. ASU scored a team total of 48.800 in the event.

In a gracious gesture, Washington head coach Joanne Bowers honored Arizona State head coach John Spini post meet. Spini announced his retirement from the sport following 34 years as the head coach of the Gym Devils.

Next up, the Sun Devils host California for Arizona State’s first ever combined gymnastics and wrestling meet on Fri., Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. MT. The “Beauty and the Beast” meet will also be a blackout meet with $3 admission for fans wearing black.
