No. 24 OSU Hosts No. 20 Lehigh and No. 6 Oklahoma
Corvallis, Ore. – The No. 24 Oregon State wrestling team hosts No. 20 Lehigh and No. 6 Oklahoma this weekend in its final two home duals of the season (Rankings: The Open Mat).
Saturday’s match against Oklahoma also marks Senior Day for Oregon State wrestling. The Beavers will be honoring six seniors for their time, hard work, and commitment to the program, before the match is set to start. These seniors include, Lucas Mondragon, Austin Morehead, RJ Pena, Scott Sakaguchi, Tyler Sherman, and John Tuck.
After splitting the previous weekend, the Beavers (7-4) are looking to take down their ranked opponents in Gill Coliseum before hitting the road to finish off the season.
Thursday, Oregon State faces Lehigh (6-4), marking the 10th meeting between the two squads. The Beavs last battled the Mountain Hawks in 2013 and earned a 20-14 victory on the road. Oregon State is 6-3-0 all-time against Lehigh, the first match dating back to 1974.
Both teams are meant to feature ranked wrestlers come Thursday, making for a tight match. The Beavs have four ranked wrestlers amongst the starters, No. 12/16 Scott Sakaguchi (149), No. 11/9 RJ Pena (157), No. 13/11 Taylor Meeks (197), and No. 15/17 Amarveer Dhesi (HWT), by InterMat/The Open Mat, respectively.
Lehigh finds five of its starters ranked, No. 7/6 Mason Beckman (133), No. 15 Laike Gardner, No. 11/12 Mitch Minotti (149), No. 10/8 Joey Napoli (157), and No. 16/14 Elliot Riddick (174). With possible ranked matchups at the 149 and 157 weight classes, both Sakaguchi and Pena will be looking for solid wins.
Saturday, Oregon State will take on Oklahoma (7-1), marking the 19th meeting of the two schools. The Beavers last went head to head with the Sooners in 2010, and it was Oklahoma who tallied a 25-6 victory at home. Oregon State is 4-14-0 all-time against Oklahoma, the first matchup dating back to 1967.
The Sooners will likely be featuring eight ranked wrestlers come Saturday, including No. 7/7 Jarrod Patterson (125), No. 8/8 Cody Brewer (133), No. 15/20 Nick Lester (141), No. 2/2 Kendrick Maple (149), No. 19/19 Justin DeAngelis (157), No. 1/1 Andrew Howe (174), No. 3/3 Travis Rutt (197), and No. 17/15 Ross Larson (HWT) (Rankings: InterMat/The Open Mat).
Both Sakaguchi and Pena will face ranked opponents once again, and Sakaguchi will have the chance to knock off one of the top wrestlers in his weight class. Meeks and Dhesi will also be wrestling ranked opponents. At 197, Meeks will have the opportunity to take down one of the top wrestlers, while Dhesi will face an opponent ranked very similar to him.
