Ducks Sweep No. 50 San Diego State at ITA Kick-Off
DURHAM, N.C. - The University of Oregon men’s tennis team closed the ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a sweep of nationally ranked San Diego State. The No. 54 Ducks (4-1) topped No. 50 San Diego State, 4-0, Sunday at Duke’s Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
The Ducks won the doubles point and three straight singles match, earning their third sweep of the season and a first victory over a ranked foe.
"The boys came out of the gate like a pack of hungry wolves," said head coach Nils Schyllander. "I'm proud of how we responded today after falling to Duke yesterday. It was a very solid overall performance against a quality opponent."
Oregon struck first in doubles play with a decisive win in the No. 1 match. Senior Robin Cambier and sophomore Kevin Farin defeated Hunter Nicholas and Thorsten Bertsch, 6-3, to reach double figures in total doubles wins (10-2) this season.
The Aztecs responded with a victory in the No. 3 match, forcing Oregon to play out the remaining doubles match for the first time all season. In a dramatic conclusion to doubles, junior Joey Swaysland and sophomore Daan Maasland pulled through in a tiebreaker to give Oregon a 1-0 lead. The duo defeated Freddy Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens, 6-5, in No. 2 doubles.
Oregon carried the momentum into singles play, quickly winning three straight set matches to secure a sweep and leave three singles matches unfinished.
Maasland made quick work of Gelbrich in No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Against Duke on Saturday, Maasland was on match point before his match was left unfinished. The Geldrop, Netherlands, native is 3-1 in dual singles.
"Daan really took it to another level this weekend," said Schyllander. "He played two very complete matches."
Junior Daniel Sardu also bounced back from his first singles loss of the dual campaign, disposing of his No. 4 opponent in two sets. Sardu topped Jebens, 6-4, 6-4 and improved to 7-3 this season in singles.
Freshman Jayson Amos showed his poise with two tiebreaker wins in No. 6 singles, clinching an Oregon victory. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native beat Milen Ianakiev, 6-5 (7-5), 6-5 (7-5), in a tightly contested match. Amos is 8-3 this year in singles play.
"Jayson showed his ability to be a clutch player, clinching the dual," said Schyllander. "He won two close tiebreakers today and grinded out an important win for us."
Farin (No. 1 singles) and Cambier (No. 2 singles) each had their matches abandoned after winning the first set. Swaysland led the second set of his No. 5 singles match, 4-3, before it was abandoned.
Oregon is a combined 21-4 (.840) in dual singles and 8-3 (.727) in dual doubles this spring.
The Ducks return to action Friday, Jan. 31, hosting Fresno State in the first match of a two-game series between the teams. The match will get underway at 5 p.m. (PT). Oregon will then host the Bulldogs on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. (PT). Both matches will be played at the Student Tennis Center.
