UCLA Track and Field Splits Squad this Weekend
LOS ANGELES – In the second weekend of competition for the UCLA track and field team, the Bruins will be slightly split up as the majority of the squad will head to Albuquerque, N.M., to compete in the New Mexico Team Invite while the distance squad will travel to Seattle, Wash., to partake in the UW Invitational.
“I'm looking forward to adding our sprints team to the mix for this weekend's competition,” director of track and field Mike Maynard said. “We have started to settle down into regular training now that we are back on our track. We should be caught up and ready to roll soon.”
The UW Invitational will start things off for the Bruins this weekend as the meet is slated to begin on Friday, January 31, with the track events scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. PT. Saturday the track events will start at 9:15 a.m. PT.
The New Mexico Team Invite is scheduled for Saturday, February 1, and is an all-day event. The meet will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center, which will be the home of the 2014 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships.
In the opening week of competition the Bruins made their mark with some impressive individual performances at the NAU invitational. Eight etched their name in the top-25 in the country in their respective events.
Nick Hartle leads the way ranked sixth in the 800m with an altitude converted time of 1:49.04. Mike Woepse checks in at seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 17-8.50 while Elena Clarke cleared 13-4.25 to rank 23rd. Kelsey Smith posted an altitude adjusted time of 4:42 in the mile to rank 11th in the country.
In the high jump, Caroline Gyllenbern cleared 5-10 to rank tied for 21st in the country. Cody Crampton ranks tied for 24th with a jump of 7-0.25. Nicholas Scarvelis heaved the shot 61-2.75 to rank 18th overall while Alec Faldermeyer tossed the weight 65-4 to rank 24th.
Next weekend the Bruins will head to College Station, Texas to participate in the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational. The two-day event will begin on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
