Jan 31, 2014

SEATTLE – The California Golden Bears began the University of Washington Invitational at Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle on Friday with just four participants, junior Jaci Powell (pentathlon), freshman Emma McCarthy (women’s pole vault), junior Chioma Amaechi (women's weight throw) and redshirt sophomore Isaac Dan (men's weight throw). Day one saw Powell post the third best pentathlon total of her collegiate career with a score of 3460, which placed her eighth, while McCarthy cleared 11-6.25 and finished 11th on Friday night. Amaechi had her best throw of 63-4.00 on her third attempt, which placed her third. On the men's side, Dan finished with a throw of 57-6.00 in his first time competing in the event, placing fifth.

Powell, a junior from Oakdale, Calif., set her personal best in the pentathlon at Dempsey last year during the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Feb. 22, when she totaled 3536 points. On Friday, she came up a few seconds short of her PR in the 800 meters, posting a time of 2:27.81. She also had the second best shot put mark of her collegiate career on, with a throw of 34-9.00.

California will be back in action at the University of Washington Invitational Saturday, as seven more Golden Bears take to Dempsey Indoor Facility. Fans can stay up to date on the UW Invitational on Saturday with Live Stats and can also view a live stream here.
