TBT: Nicole Kobrine

Feb 13, 2014

Every Thursday, will present an interview with a Stanford women’s gymnastics alumna. This week, sophomore Maggie Teets features Nicole Kobrine (‘92) who earned a degree in psychology and competed on vault and beam.

Maggie: Can you describe what you have been doing since graduating from Stanford?

Nicole: I moved back east to Washington, D.C., where I grew up, and went to law school at George Washington University. I have been practicing law at a large international law firm ever since. I am a civil litigator and a partner at the firm. I married my college sweetheart, a Stanford ‘92 grad as well, and we have three young kids – a son and twin daughters. So my life is pretty busy!

Maggie: What lessons have you carried with you from your experience on the Stanford gymnastics team?

Nicole:  My experience as a club gymnast growing up involved competing only on an individual basis. Being a part of the Stanford gymnastics team helped teach me the value of teamwork and camaraderie.

Maggie: What are your favorite Stanford memories?

Nicole: There are too many to list! I loved doing homework in the sun, watching friends at Sunken Diamond and on the football field, getting fixed up in the training room, riding my scooter around campus, enjoying Palo Alto and exploring the Bay Area. But I certainly will never forget the great times I had with the gymnastics team – both the men and women – preseason before the rest of the students started.

Maggie: What was your favorite competition?

Nicole:  I loved competing at home, so really, my favorite competition was each of the meets at Burnham Pavilion.  I loved having my non-gymnastics friends there to support the team and me.

Maggie: Who was your favorite professor?

Nicole:  My favorite professor taught Greek vase painting – seriously!  She was creative and insightful and made a required class fascinating.  Just another thing that I loved about Stanford.

Maggie: How is it now watching SWG compete versus being in the arena?

Nicole:  I love watching, but really wish that I could be on the floor competing and cheering for my teammates.

Maggie: Do you have any advice for the girls on the SWG team now?

Nicole: Truly enjoy every moment – from competitions, practices, classes and hanging out with friends and team members. Your Stanford experience will go by so fast. You will blink and find yourself graduating. And there is no other place in the world like Stanford – so revel in it!
