Feb 15, 2014

HOUSTON - Eighth-seeded California suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of top-seeded and defending champion Virginia, 4-0, on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships at the Downtown Club at the Met. The 11th-ranked Golden Bears (6-1 record) next play 10th-ranked Texas (8-2) in Sunday’s consolation round.

Top-ranked Virginia advances to Sunday’s semifinals with a 6-0 record.

In the first completed match in doubles, Cal’s team of senior Campbell Johnson and freshman Filip Bergevi fell on court three, 6-2, to the Cavaliers’ Mac Styslinger/Thai-Son Kwiatkowski. The Cavs won the doubles point when Bear senior Ben McLachlan and freshman Andre Goransson lost on court one to Alex Domijan/Justin Shane, 6-3.

Cal fell behind 2-0 when junior Gregory Bayane lost to Kwiatkowski in singles, 6-0, 6-1, on court five. Johnson, ranked No. 68, then suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Domijan on court two. Bergevi, playing on court three, fell to Shane, 6-0, 6-2, to wrap up the overall match for the Cavs.

“Virginia played at the level of the No. 1 team in the country,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “We faced some early challenges when we lost some game points early in the match, and it kind of snowballed. We’re spending our energy getting ready to rebound for tomorrow’s match with Texas.”

The Bears play the 13th-seeded Longhorns at 7 a.m. PT/9 a.m. CT on Sunday at the Met.
