Gilmore Homers, But Beavers Drop Pair

Feb 20, 2014

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Junior Dani Gilmore hit a home run and a triple during Thursday’s action, but it wasn’t enough for the Oregon State softball team, as the Beavers dropped a pair of contests on the opening day of the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.

Gilmore’s third inning solo-shot gave the Beavers an early 2-0 lead over Boise State in Oregon State’s first game of the day, but the Broncos would come back to take the 10-2 victory. The home run was Gilmore’s fourth of the season.

Sophomore Kori Nishitomi went 2-for-3, reaching base for her 10th consecutive game, while senior Hannah Bouska went 2-for-2 and classmate Isabelle Batayola went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The Beavers opened the scoring the second inning. Bouska started things off with a one-out single, before moving to second on a fielder’s choice. With Batayola at the plate, Bouska stole third, before Batayola brought her home with a base-hit to right field.

Oregon State’s lead would not last, however, as the Broncos responded with four runs in the bottom of the third, to take their first lead of the contest. Boise State added another six runs over the next two innings to claim the 10-2 win.

The Beavers found themselves trailing early against No. 13/18 Oklahoma in the second game of the day, as the Sooners put five runs on the board in the first two innings of play.

Oregon State would fight back, scoring three in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to two. Gilmore started the rally with a triple, before coming home on a wild pitch. Freshman Alexis Gonzalez followed Gilmore with a walk, before being replaced on the base-paths by classmate Amee Aarhus. Aarhus would advance to third on a base hit from junior CJ Chirichigno before both runners scored on a pair of wild pitches to bring the score to 5-3.

Oklahoma responded with six more runs, however, to win the game 11-3.

Oregon State will return to action tomorrow evening, when it takes on Virginia at 8 p.m.
